New World Order July 01, 1919

USING THE CHURCHES FOR
LEAGUE PROPAGANDA
m

The officials .of a self constituted
H Church Peace Union have sent to the
fl Senate a set of resolutions declaring that
m the Versailles covenant represents “the
K. first earnest effort tp establishithe King- ‘
dom of Christ on earth,” that when the
United States entered the war it did so
“with a solemn declaration that it took
up arms to establish a new world order,”
that the proposed league of nations
scheme demands “the same high and hon
orable standards of conduct among na
tions as those which pertain among high
minded honorable men,” and that it was
the new idealism of the Versailles coven
ant for which the youth of the allied na
tions gave up their lives on the battlefield.
It seems a somewhat cynical commen
tary upon the Christianity of nineteen
centuries to set up the claim that not un
til 1919, at the Paris peace conference,
has there been made a serious effort to
“estblish the Kingdom of Christ on
earth.” Some people cling to the belief
that Christ expected the establishment of
His kingdom through spiritual, rather
than political means Nor is it clear, from
a readng of the covenant, jut how the
document is going to “establish the King
dom of Christ.” The emperor of Japan
whose representatives helped formulate
this treaty, and who is an object of re
ligious worship himself, might be able to
throw some light on this proposition, but
the pronunciamento of the Church Un
ion deals only in glittering generalties
and is therefore not convincing in the
discussion of this subject.
That the United States announced at
the beginning of the war that it took up
arms to establish a new world order, is
hot well remembered by the American
people who do recall that President Wil
son in his message asking for a declara
tion of war,, gave as the basis for the de
claration that American lives and Ameri
can rights had been assailed, Congress
passed a resolution declaring that the
acts of Germany in’ these specific matters
created a state of war. The record is
clear on this subject
If,, the Versailles covenant demands the
same high and honorable standards of
conduct among nations as those which
pertain among high minded honorable
men, this memorial to the senate ought
to have included an explanation ‘of the
act of the diplomats who framed this
covenant in taking from China the prov
ince of Shantung ad delivering it over
with forty million people to the control 1
of Japan-
